The Good Shepherd, or Apollo or Orpheus
MetadataShow full item record
As for the charge of idolatry this representative of humanitas was not seen as an idol but rather as a symbol. In Christian literature God's love was portrayed in the symbol of the shepherd of the psalms while Christ having identified himself with the Good Shepherd uses it as a parallel. To a church which emphatically rejected idolatry, the figure of the Good Shepherd seemed twice removed from such a charge. The figure was neither pagan idol nor Christian God but the symbol of Christ's care. Catacomb fresco of the Good Shepherd/Apollo/Orpheus, Coemeterium Majus.
