Gottfried Bohm, architect. Bohm's conviction was that a pilgrimage church should represent a very different experience from ones parish church. The pilgrimage church should be the columniation of a journey, here marked by a gradual ascent past housing for clergy and pilgrims, through a series of wide streets/piazzas into the monumental space of the church itself (second only to the Cologne Cathedral as the largest church in the archdiocese). The exterior of the church reflects not only the angled rooftop of the surrounding village but even more appropriately those of the mountains visible from Neviges.
