dc.description.abstractThe synthronon is the semi-circular raised seating in the apse. The highest ranking ecclesiastic was of course the bishop who sat and preached from his throne. Beneath him were the elders, the deacons, the acolytes, and other minor ecclesiastics. Note the cancelli screens below and the iconostasis above looking into the sanctuary with the altar table, the bishop's chair, and the synthronon.en_US
