Local martyrs and Christ the lamb
MetadataShow full item record
Below Christ enthroned as lawgiver, four local martyrs stand around a second representation of Christ as the lamb who stands upon a mountain from which flow rivers of living water. The image, Biblical in origin, emphasizes rule and dominion, all of this is in marked contrast with the iconography prior to the peace of the church when it primarily served personal needs. Fresco of Christ as the source of living water, found beneath the enthroned Christ in the catacomb of Pietro e Marcellino.
