Return to the world
Throughout Ando has revealed his preference for a spare architectural palette. Marble stairs, concrete walls with the signature marking of the square form plates and a spare hand rail.
The Water Temple
The curved wall ultimately reveals the Water Temple itself.
Water Temple at Hompukuji
Tadao Ando, architect, 1990-91. This is the new main temple for the Shingon Buddhist sect. Over brilliant white gravel one enters Ando's trademark concrete wall emphasizing that one is enterring a special place.
Entrance to Buddhist temple
At the bottom of the stairs a Buddhist temple with traditional lattice and wooden timber work covered with vermillion paint.
Passing through the door of the straight concrete wall one continues on the white gravel path around a curved wall which will gradually reveal one's purpose.
What is the purpose of the concrete projection into the midst of the tranquil pool?
The Water Temple is appropriately covered with water lilies.
Again one finds oneself between a straight and curved wall.
Behind the vermillion screen is the central Buddha.
