Generalizations have likely been made about groups since identifiable clusters of humanity have existed. Of course we can easily imagine a group taking pride in some of its shared characteristics: Inuits in their resourcefulness, Michigan Wolverine football fans in their fanatical support, and middle schoolers in their love for Old Navy products (this year anyway). On the other hand, the average Cretan probably took exception to the harsh judgment of his fellow Cretan, Epimenides.
